Programme Note
Join the Basilinda Consort for an evening of music and spoken word as we explore how Oxford’s Cathedral and cloisters might have sounded if it had remained a nunnery, with repertoire featuring newly discovered and re-constructed music from English Convents in exile during the 18th century.
‘England UnReformed’ is a unique opportunity to explore the nooks and crannies of the cathedral during a live music event - we encourage guests to stroll the space as we reveal the sound of repertoire for historical English women as sung by modern voices in a Cathedral with monastic roots and a uniquely monastic style of architecture. This tapestry of tunes - from polyphony to plainchant to fiddle-playing - is not one to miss.
The Basilinda Consort is an early music ensemble dedicated to exploring the musical lives of English Christian women religious. Focused on exiled English convent music, we explore the rich history of medieval and early modern English women as singers, players, composers, commentators, writers, and even bookbinders.
