Pinsuti return to their traditional strengths in early music with Victoria’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah”, in the ideally suited acoustics of Christ Church, Skipton. Victoria's nine “Lamentations”, which set extracts from the Old Testament lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem, contain some of his most intensely moving music and rank among his greatest achievements.
Less well-known than Palestrina, Victoria was the pre-eminent Spanish musician of the Late Renaissance. Born in Spain around 1548, during his twenties he studied in Rome, possibly under Palestrina himself. A leading figure in Roman church music until 1587, Victoria then returned to Spain.
Pinsuti will perform six “Lamentations” and a selection of the “Tenebrae Responsories”, also originally intended to be performed during Holy Week, with texts mainly from the Gospels, relating to the Passion of Christ. These penitential and contemplative works elevate the spirit with their soaring harmonies and gentle interplay of voices.
