Programme Note

The William Byrd Singers, conducted by Keith Orrell, invite you to hear the rarely-performed Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.
Although short extracts are sometimes performed, it will be a rare treat for Manchester audiences to hear the complete work sung in old church Slavonic. Look out for visual effects to give the concert an authentic atmosphere!

In 1910 Rachmaninoff composed this glorious unaccompanied setting to honour the fourth century saint whose name means "golden-tongued", ranging from almost whispered prayers to dramatic joyful outbursts.

We welcome Thomas Lowen as our bass soloist, and look forward to seeing you!
