Programme Note

Join us for a moving evening exploring the theme of tears and triumph through music both old and new. Pergolesi's stunning and achingly expressive Stabat Mater, written in the final weeks of his tragically short life, opens our concert in the darkest key possible for 1736, setting the thirteenth-century Latin hymn depicting Mary weeping at the foot of the cross. The second half of our concert features Oliver Tarney's powerful Magnificat, written in 2014, which interleaves the text of the Magnificat with related texts from Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions. Skillfully sewing together multiple traditions and perspectives into dazzling and rich musical textures that cleverly play with time, Tarney's transcendental and deeply moving work completes our powerful journey from darkness to light.
