Programme Note

The majority of Handel's work was popular during his lifetime and then fell into obscurity, but the Messiah has endured.

This work has strong historic associations with Leicestershire. The first parish performance of Messiah was at Church Langton, causing traffic jams and every inn in the area was fully booked! The Leicester Philharmonic Choir chose the work for their first concert on Christmas Day 1886 and for many years the Phil's Messiah was part of Leicester's Christmas tradition. This is the choir’s 91st performance and is in March, before Easter.
