Programme Note
Rossini joked that he could not decide whether his Petite Messe Solennelle was “musique sacrée” (sacred music) or “sacrée musique” (damned music), and its jaunty and memorable melodies have enchanted and surprised audiences ever since. Yet Rossini also shows himself a master of counterpoint in the magnificent fugues which end the Gloria and Credo. The Oxford Bach Choir pairs Rossini's late masterpiece with a selection of motets by his younger contemporary, the Austrian Anton Bruckner. Best known for his great symphonies, Bruckner also wrote much sacred music throughout his life, and his beautiful and dramatic motets represent a high point in nineteenth-century religious music.
