Programme Note
The 20th Oxford Lieder Festival draws to a close with music by Schubert and Vaughan Williams performed by renowned baritone Christopher Maltman and the fast-rising pianist-conductor Audrey Saint-Gil. In his Songs of Travel, Vaughan Williams sets the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson in a cycle that has echoes of Schubert and the archetypal romantic wanderer, yet is quintessentially English and a profoundly influential work of the early 20th century. Following this, we conclude with Schubert’s settings of Heine – six extraordinary songs from the last year of his life – and the very last song he wrote, ‘Die Taubenpost’.
All evening concerts this year are performed twice, at 5.30pm and 8.15pm. This 8.15pm performance is a repeat performance of Event 103. This performance will be in-person and livestreamed.
Enjoy the whole festival live online for £165 with a Digital Festival Pass. All events will be available on demand after broadcast until 30th November, so you can catch up at a time which suits you.
