Programme Note
"One Foot in Eden" will see the Cantus Ensemble perform a programme of beguiling and arresting music by 20th & 21st Century composers on Saturday 10 March in the heart of London.
Completing another chapter in the performance of Francis Poulenc's most challenging vocal works, the choir will perform his atmospheric four motets for lent, which vary from the sublime, to the ferocious as they plot the story of the crucifixion of Christ. The ensemble will also perform Benjamin Britten's 'A Hymn to St Cecilia' which is a love note to music, alongside a rare performance of the hauntingly atmospheric "Deus Meus" from Roxanna Panufnik's 'Westminster Mass'.
The title piece of the concert, Nicholas Maw's evocative "One Foot in Eden, Still I stand" is British contemporary writing for choir at its most effective, setting Edmund Muir's mystical and thought provoking text. The choir will also perform four of James MacMillan's Strathclyde Motets: ambitious works for choir by one of of Britain's most celebrated loving composers. The concert will finish with Britten's rapturous arrangement for choir and organ of "Rejoice in the Lamb", a setting of the text by Christopher Smart, itself an eclectic tome written whilst the author was in an asylum.
With such a gripping array of music, performed in the majestic surroundings of Farm Street Church, this is not a concert to miss.
