Programme Note

James Newby collected droves of new supporters when he stood in at the last minute to open last year’s Festival. The Ilkley Gazette commented upon Newby’s ‘lustrous dark baritone’ and praised his ‘remarkable insight’ and ‘genius for storytelling’ at what was a highlight of the 2019 Festival. BBC New Generation Artist, Newby, together with Middleton, offer a programme of wandering and romanticism before they tour the programme to Wigmore Hall, Vienna, Brussels, Budapest, Lisbon, Baden-Baden, Stockholm, Cologne, Amsterdam and Hamburg.

‘Newby has a winning platform manner and a glorious voice that will take him far’
MusicOMH, Wigmore Hall recital with Joseph Middleton

‘Middleton… again demonstrates that he’s one of the most talented, intuitive collaborative pianists of his generation’
Classical Music Magazine
