Programme Note
Headline act Vula Viel will perform as part of their UK tour promoting their album 'Do Not Be Afraid' (25 January 2019), which continues their unique musical journey centred around the Gyil (Ghanaian xylophone).
The band’s new set confidently weaves sparse polyrhythms and intricate rhythm structures around bandleader Bex Burch’s Gyil lines and take the instrument’s sound into new territory, with bassist Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland, Melt Yourself Down, Rokia Traore) and drummer Jim Hart (Cloudmakers, Ralph Alessi, Electric Biddle) introducing a rough, post-punk edge to the band’s sound.
Kitty O'Neal is an artist from the U.K, currently based in Southampton. In 2018 Kitty released debut album “Giving in to You”, receiving critical acclaim from BBC Introducing South & Solent and attracting highly esteemed venues in the UK where she has supported Band of Skulls and Meadowlark. Mixing her folk influences with a love of alternative/pop and electronic sound, her performance encapsulates both moods in a unique and ever-evolving sound. Kitty's poignant songwriting, catchy melodies and distinct emotive performance makes for a captivating and vibrant live experience, filled with both soulful melancholy and groove. At PLAYLIST Kitty will perform an intimate solo set of versions of her favourite tracks from Giving in to You, and a couple of new unheard tunes, giving audience members a chance to hear her songs old and new in their first stages of life!
Last Light is the solo project of viola player, composer and music educator Neil Valentine. Taking inspiration from Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Winged Victory for the Sullen, Neil crafts beautiful string textures, rhythmic loops and electronic soundscapes. This event marks the launch of Last Light ahead of his debut EP - BLACK SUN EP, and the release of Reflections, a classical cross over album with with Voces8, Apollo5 and composer Paul Smith realised on VCM Records this July.
