Programme Note

The concert features music by female composers and coincides with the centenary of the Representation of the people act 1918 which marked the beginning of women being given the right to vote. Ethel Smyth was a suffragette and composed the song of the movement. Maconchy acknowledged her debt to Smyth for fighting the corner of women composers in the early 20th century. McDowall is a contemporary composer writing often for choirs.
