Programme Note
A plea for peace in troubled times is at the heart of a concert titled ‘Ṣim 'Alenu Shalom – Dona Nobis Pacem’ to be held in Durham Cathedral on 9 March.
Very special will be the sound of 18 members of the Newcastle Youth Choir Project singing Bernstein’s famous ‘Adonai’, Psalm 23. This is the music played over the credits in the recent film Maestro about the composer.
The choir’s music director Tom Edney said: ‘Against the tragic background of conflicts across the world today the message of peace in these works resonates powerfully.
‘Vaughan Williams was writing after serving in the First World War but also against growing political tensions that would lead to the Second World War, while Bernstein was composing at the height of the Cold War and threats of nuclear annihilation.
‘Complementing these two pieces is Oliver Tarney’s Canticle of Elizabeth, a very different and personal interpretation of our theme of peace. These three works explore collective and individual responses to conflict.’
