Programme Note
The Durham Singers are joined by the internationally-renowned early music group I Fagiolini and their director Robert Hollingworth for Monteverdi's dazzling 1610 Vespers. The Vespers consist of a compilation of magnificent psalms settings, often for double choir, and sensually expressive solos, in which Monteverdi shows off his skill in a range of styles. The Vespers call for an exotic orchestra of early instruments, including cornetts, sackbuts, dulcian, theorbo and recorders, and for this performance we’ll be accompanied by the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble and the Monteverdi String Band. Young singers from Durham Johnston School Chamber Choir and Durham County Youth Band will sing the parts that are traditionally taken by a children's choir.
