Programme Note
When Onegin arrives at her family’s country estate with his friend Lemsky, bookish teenager Tatyana is impressed by his air of sophistication. Impulsively, she pours her heart out to him in a letter but when the sophisticated Onegin rejects her impassioned declaration of love the fall-out leads to broken friendship, tragic death and bitter regret. Years later, they meet again in St. Petersburg and are confronted with a devastating moment of truth. In a timeless story of innocence and experience, Tchaikovsky’s haunting score captures all the poignancy and drama of Pushkin’s great lyric poem. Tatyana’s emotional and intense ‘Letter song’ is just one of the celebrated arias that stand alongside folk songs and exuberant dance tunes in a work combining the spirit of its age with the never-changing story of love and human frailty.
Guildford Opera’s production can be seen for three nights, Wednesday Nov 30, Friday Dec 1 and Saturday Dec 2 at the Electric Theatre, Guildford. They will be singing the opera in English and are accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
