Programme Note

It’s summer of 1791 and an anonymous messenger has just appeared at Mozart’s door with a mysterious request: write a Requiem Mass for an unnamed patron and ask no questions.

Already exhausted from one of the busiest and most successful years of his life, Mozart became consumed by the work. As his health deteriorated, he grew convinced he was composing a funeral mass for himself.

Be it fact or fiction, the story of the Requiem remains tragic. Mozart died aged just 35 before the Requiem was complete, leaving behind one of the most famous unfinished masterpieces in musical history. His widow, Constanze, enlisted Mozart’s students and colleagues to finish the score from his sketches, creating a work whose origins remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

Joined by Trinity Boys and Girls Choir, we bring Mozart’s powerful swansong to life in our home venue, Fairfield Halls.
