As part of the London Handel Festival, the Choir of King’s College London makes their debut at the Foundling Museum. They will perform a work that Handel wrote especially for the benefit of the Foundling Hospital in 1749, his Foundling Hospital Anthem, which he composed for a benefit concert to raise funds to build the hospital’s new chapel. Famously, rather than writing a wholly new work, Handel drew on several pre-existing pieces of music in this composition. Most of these are not particularly well known today, but one is – the piece ends with a reprise of the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, lifted straight from the Messiah. The first performance of Handel’s Anthem was a great success, with moving and uplifting music that still holds ready appeal today. Please join us for this performance, and for our free talk at 2pm, ‘Handel and the Foundling Hospital’.
