Devon Baroque Orchestra celebrates its 25th anniversary and the Dartington centenary in the glorious Great Hall

Add to my Calendar 28-09-2025 15:00 28-09-2025 17:00 36 Gala Concert: The English Genius The celebrations of Devon Baroque Orchestra’s 25thanniversary culminate in this Gala Concert. Timed to coincide with the centenary of Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirsts rural revival project at Dartington Hall, the orchestra is thrilled to return to the Great Hall to perform a glittering programme of English music from the18th century.  The walls of the Great Hall vibrate with the music performed not only over the last 100years, but also in its entire history.  Could the music in this concert been heard in the distant past when the Champernowne family was resident? Join the celebrations and hear the only professional historically informed orchestra in the south west under the stunning direction of Persephone Gibbs (violin) and Andrew Wilson-Dickson (harpsichord).   Persephone joined Devon Baroque as Artistic Director in 2016 and  leads the orchestra with style and panache, to critical acclaim.  She is a great communicator, not only through her violin playing, but also in her public speaking at concerts.  Andrew has been a stalwart of Devon Baroque for many years, creating stunning and fascinating programmes as well as being a truly sensitive and imaginative continuo player.  He is also a composer, conductor, author, tuba player and teacher. Devon Baroque is extremely fortunate to have two of the great exponents of historically informed performance as Artistic Directors Devon Baroque is joined by Russell Gilmour, one of the finest natural trumpet players in Europe and worldwide. He has performed extensively across Europe, as well as in Asia, North America, and Australia. Russell’s innovative book, ‘Just’ Natural Trumpet (pub 2024) is described as ‘the ultimate guide on how to play the natural trumpet’. Russell is no stranger to Devon Baroque or Dartington, having featured in many concerts with the orchestra – notably his Brandenburg 2 a few years ago.  Devon Baroque is thrilled to have Russell perform in our Gala Celebrations.   Joining Russell is Katie McClaughry on Natural Trumpet  and soprano Rebecca Ramsey who is also no stranger to the stage of the Great Hall.  Rebecca’s  welcome return adds yet more glitter and sparkle to our celebrations. Rebecca will sing music by Henry Purcell and Handel, including Handel’s wonderful ‘Let the bright Seraphim’ and Purcell’s ‘Genius of England’.   Great Hall - Dartington Hall, Totnes DD/MM/YYYY
