Programme Note
LCS presents an evening of glorious choral and orchestral music, combining Schubert’s majestic Mass in E Flat with Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto in C, K. 467. The concert opens with Schubert’s joyous Offertorium, Intende Voci, for tenor, chorus and orchestra.
Schubert’s Mass in E Flat was his sixth setting of the Mass, written shortly before his untimely death and was never performed in his lifetime. It is a powerful work of many contrasts: in turns peaceful, mysterious, dramatic and exhilarating, and of course, as we would expect from Schubert, always richly lyrical.
His Offertorium is a delightful little gem, with a tenor soloist soaring above the choir, while the orchestra provides a sparkling accompaniment.
Mozart’s glorious Piano Concerto in C is nowadays often dubbed the ‘Elvira Madigan’ following its use in the soundtrack of the film of that name. This beautiful concerto rightly remains one of Mozart’s most-loved works.
