Programme Note
The Holst Singers and Stephen Layton return to St Sophia's - one of London's most remarkable buildings and one which lends itself particularly to performance of à capella choral music. In that glorious setting we'll be performing works from the rich polyphonic traditions of Portugal and England in the late Renaissance.
The focus of the programme is the six-voice requiem mass written by Manuel Cardoso (published in the 'Liber primus missarum', Lisbon, in 1625) - an under-performed work which positively shimmers with immortal light, peace and hope. Framing the Requiem are the four Byrd motets.
The Holst Singers are one of Britain’s foremost choirs, described by the BBC as “a leading chorus on the international stage”.
Stephen Layton is one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation. Often described as the finest exponent of choral music in the world today, his ground-breaking approach has had a profound influence on choral music over the last 30 years.
