Programme Note
At the heart of a weekend of services and other events at Guildford Cathedral to mark the 75th anniversary of ‘Victory in Europe’, Southern Pro Musica is joined by Guildford Cathedral Choir for an inspiring concert of orchestral and choral music.
Walton’s ‘Spitfire’ Prelude, excerpts from Beethoven’s tumultuous 5th ‘Victory’ Symphony and Eric Coates’s iconic Dambusters theme are contrasted with highlights from Karl Jenkins’s evocative The Armed Man and Tippett’s Spirituals.
As a tribute to Dame Vera Lynn there’ll be wartime gems such as ‘The White Cliffs of Dover ’ and ‘We’ll meet again’ performed by exquisite soprano Alexandra Stevenson, and Head Chorister Hannah Dienes-Williams will delight the audience with Patrick Hawes’s Prayer to a Guardian Angel
Included in the programme will be appearances by the nation’s favourite actress, Dame Penelope Keith; Nicholas Owen, much--lauded broadcaster and journalist; and Elisabeth Gaunt, whose father was Barnes Wallace.
There will be a retiring collection on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund.
