Programme Note

The elegant sound of Vienna comes to Hayling in our ‘popular classics’ season-opener this year!

To open the concert, the ‘Light Cavalry’ Overture by Franz von Suppé brings us to attention with some well-known tunes.

Next, our Bob Harding Bursary holder, Richard Miller, has chosen the delightful Cello Concerto in C by Haydn.  The solo cellist will be Richard’s friend and fellow-student at the Royal College of Music, Ruth Hallows.   The Concerto in C is thought to have been written in around 1761 but the score was only found 200 years later in the Prague National Museum!  It quickly became a favourite with cellists and audiences alike.

Brahms started writing symphonies quite late compared to many composers – he was already 43 when he had the confidence to release his first.   However, it took him only nine years to complete another three with the fourth, and last one he would produce, receiving its premiere when he was 52.  The Symphony no. 4 is a work of genius with fabulous melodies, the exuberance of his beloved Austrian and Hungarian dance rhythms and a powerful and dramatic ending to bring our concert to a close.
