Programme Note
For the final concert of its season Hereford Choral Society presents Haydn’s The Creation, taking us from its famous ‘Representation of Chaos’ via the glorious creation of light, to the idyllic life of Adam and Eve in Eden – before everything went wrong.
Inspired by his visits to London, where he had heard the oratorios of Handel, this was one of Haydn’s greatest undertakings: while Handel composed Messiah in just over three weeks, the composition of The Creation took nearly eighteen months. The libretto’s combination of the Book of Genesis, the Psalms, and Milton’s Paradise Lost, was an excellent poetic springboard for Haydn’s marvellous musical imagination, clearly excited by the enormous topic at hand.
