Programme Note

This very special concert marks an equally special pair of anniversaries, marking both the 90th anniversary of the birth of William Mathias and the 50th anniversary of the première of his composition "This Worlde’s Joie". To quote from reviewer Colin Clarke (MusicWeb International), ‘William Mathias was completely and utterly at home writing for voices. It is an assurance that reaches its culmination in the staggering cantata, "This Worlde’s Joie" … It is a work of great strength, and also a work to treasure.’ The work is full of exuberant and exciting orchestral colour and features an especially extended percussion section.

"This Worlde’s Joie" is paired with Dvořák’s, "Te Deum" and Parry's "Blest Pair of Sirens".

The concert is genrously sponsored by The Vaughan Williams Foundation and by The Music Reprieval Trust
