Programme Note

Subtitled the 'Harmoniemesse' or 'Wind Band Mass' because of the prominence of wind instruments in the score, the Mass in B flat major Hob. XXII No 14 was Haydn's last major work. Lively and energetic, it is full of his characteristic musical surprises. The second half of the concert takes us into the very different soundworld of Francis Poulenc, written in response to the death of a friend, artist Christian Berard and premiered in 1951.
