The programme contrasts Mozart's heart-rending Requiem, left unfinished at his death and completed by his contemporary Sussmayr, with Haydn's exuberant 'Paukenmesse', or 'Mass with Drums', so called because of its theatrical use of timpani, but also known as the 'Mass in Time of War'.
