Programme Note

The Beethoven Orchestra will begin its season in a familiar venue, Holy Innocents Church in Fallowfield, with a programme of English music. Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending has now become one of the nation’s top favourite classical pieces and with its soaring lyricism should take us out into the hills in our imaginations. The first item is by Joseph Holbrooke who is little known today but his Variations on Three Blind Mice will be a welcome introduction to his compositions for many of us. The programme finishes with the grandeur and memorable themes of Elgar’s Second Symphony.
