The young couple gave the first performance on 22 November the same year. Beethoven dedicated his second Violin Sonata, Op, 12. No. 2, to Antonio Salieri. Claude Debussy was already suffering with the cancer which was to prematurely end his life, when he began his Violin Sonata. He began to compose it in 1916 and completed it the following year. It was to be his final composition. Its three short movements provide a remarkable range of moods and emotions and, as Debussy himself touchingly commented, it represents ‘an example of what may be produced by a sick man in time of war’.
