Programme Note
Saint Saëns’ opera Henry VIII combines beautiful melodies and powerful choruses with scenes of intimate psychological drama.
The sexual allure of Anne Boleyn grips both King Henry, sung by Simon Wilson and the Spanish Ambassador, Don Gómez de Feria, sung by Kevin John. However, only one man triumphs and the climax of the opera sees Henry set aside a loyal, faithful Queen, sung by Olive Murray, overthrow the Papal Legate’s decision and declare himself Head of the Church in England.
This is a unique opportunity to see a fully staged production of this rarely performed opera, sung in English by award winning Guildford Opera with piano accompaniment and Holy Trinity Church providing an ideal setting for the royal Palaces and Westminster Hall.
