Programme Note
Haydn’s choral masterpiece, The Creation (Die Schöpfung), was inspired by Handel’s oratorios, heard on Haydn’s visits to London in the 1790s. Haydn resolved to compose a similar large-scale work with a biblical theme. A ground-breaking work in its time, remarkable for its ingenious and original use of the orchestra to describe the Book of Genesis, The Creation is full of delight. Great whales, sunrise, the rolling seas – even leaping tigers – are evoked in a fantastic tapestry of sound in one of the greatest ever oratorios.
Singing in the original German, the combined forces of the Royal Choral Society, the English Chamber Orchestra and a stellar trio of soloists, all conducted by Richard Cooke, will deliver a dramatic, lively and truly heart-warming evening of music.
