Esterhazy Singers
Programme Note
Arguably one of the finest works ever written for unaccompanied choir, the piece consists of settings of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony. It has been praised as Rachmaninov's greatest musical achievement. The Esterhazy Singers is an amateur choir that aims at professional standards. Based in the City of London, the choir is named after Haydn’s patrons, the Princes Nicholas and Paul Anton Esterhazy. The music of Haydn is central to the choir’s repertoire but it also tackles a wide range of styles, from Renaissance polyphony to ambitious contemporary choral music. It is directed by choral specialist Esther Jones (also Deputy Musical Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and parttime tutor at the Royal Academy of Music).
