Programme Note

Cavalleria Rusticana synopsis: Set in a village square circa 1930, a villager Turiddu has returned from military service to find that his fiancée Lola had married the carter Alfio while Turiddu was away. In revenge, Turiddu had seduced Santuzza, a young woman in the village. What follows is a tragic story with some of the most beautiful music Mascagni is so famous for, including the Easter Hymn and Intermezzo.

Pagliacci synopsis: Set in the same village square circa 1950 a travelling troupe arrives and sets up for a production to be held later that day. Canio is the head of the acting troupe and married to Nedda, along with Tonio and Beppe and other actors. Canio hears a rumour that his wife Nedda is secretly having an affair. Canio warns that, even though he plays a fool in the show, he does not tolerate anyone flirting with his wife in real life. Nedda is fearful of her husband’s suspicions and jealousy and just want to be free.

City of Manchester Opera presents two short operas depicting dramatic tales of love, passion and revenge: Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo.
