Cavalleria Rusticana synopsis: Set in a village square circa 1930, a villager Turiddu has returned from military service to find that his fiancée Lola had married the carter Alfio while Turiddu was away. In revenge, Turiddu had seduced Santuzza, a young woman in the village. What follows is a tragic story with some of the most beautiful music Mascagni is so famous for, including the Easter Hymn and Intermezzo. Pagliacci synopsis: Set in the same village square circa 1950 a travelling troupe arrives and sets up for a production to be held later that day. Canio is the head of the acting troupe and married to Nedda, along with Tonio and Beppe and other actors. Canio hears a rumour that his wife Nedda is secretly having an affair. Canio warns that, even though he plays a fool in the show, he does not tolerate anyone flirting with his wife in real life.
