Programme Note
Schubert composed 19 piano sonatas. Of these, five were composed in 1817, including this one. They were very much overshadowed by those of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and were neglected by recitalists until the great Artur Schnabel restored them to popularity.
The spring and summer of 1817 were devoted by Schubert to an exploration of possibilities of the piano sonata in a wide range of styles and unusual keys. The A minor sonata, D 537, is in the three-movement form of the classical piano sonata.
The opening movement in 6/8 time has the varying phrase lengths of a composer accustomed to setting music to words. The second group in F major is reached by way of a series of flattened sixths; the development section all springs from the last two notes of the exposition. The slow movement is in rondo form with a short lyrical theme and some surprising key changes. The episode in D minor has a curious staccato chordal accompaniment. The last movement is also a rondo, vigorous with a rather "spiky" opening theme, much repeated chord accompaniment but no great profundity.
We're very excited to announce that he will also give the *world premiere* of a thrilling new Yorkshire-themed work by major composer Sadie Harrison
Portraits from the Place of the Yew Trees invites its listeners on a musical journey through ancient and modern Yorkshire. The yew tree theme is heard throughout the piece as the walker travels from one town to the next, encountering the people and places upon which the work’s Portraits are based. The work is dedicated to Duncan Honeybourne with much affection.
The movements are entitled:
* The Yew Trees Yorkshire Path
* Sir George Cayley: weight, lift, drag, thrust, gravity (engineer, inventor, and aviator: Scarborough)
* Blue Man-i-th’-Moss & Auld Wife’s Trod (prehistoric monuments: North York Moors)
* Aelred of Rievaulx (Cistercian abbot)
* Frederick Delius: The Last Cuckoo (composer: Bradford)
* Mary Bateman The Yorkshire Witch: Her Lullaby (murderess: Asenby)
* Flint Willy the Shirtless (archaeological forger: Sleights)
* Amy Johnson: The Lone Girl Flyer (aviator: Kingston upon Hull)
