Programme Note
Acclaimed vocal ensemble echo present one of their most ambitious concerts to date. The group has worked in collaboration with Ikon Gallery to devise a programme which is inspired by artist Polly Apfelbaum's exhibition 'Waiting for the UFOs (a space set between a landscape and a bunch of flowers)'.
The programme's theme and title - Meet you in the Maze - stemmed particularly from Apfelbaum's statement that, when creating her work, she often follows where her materials lead her. This lead to the idea of mazes and puzzles, the navigation of the unknown and the concept of aleatory in art.
From these ideas, the ensemble has selected pieces of music from across nine centuries. This includes works such as Meredith Monk's The Games, Steve Reich's famous Clapping Music, and an arrangement of James Blake's Meet you in the Maze, alongside improvisation, folk song and theatrical use of the gallery.
The concert will take the form of a promenade, with the performers and audience travelling through the exhibition together. It will be a unique experience for all present, allowing for reflection on Apfelbaum's vibrant and compelling work, presented alongside a captivating collection of music.

About echo
echo is an ensemble of young professional singers. Since launching in early 2017, the group intends to explore the full range of what ensemble singing means - working both with and without a conductor, including improvisation in each concert and performing music both inside and outside of the Western classical canon. The group came together through Genesis Sixteen, the prestigious young artists’ scheme run by Harry Christophers and The Sixteen.
Following highly acclaimed launch concerts in London and Birmingham, echo headlined the Sounds Sublime Festival in July 2017 and made their St John’s Smith Square debut the same month, in collaboration with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Magnus Lindberg. echo were one of the inaugural Chiltern Arts Festival Take Note young artists for 2018, recently worked again with the LPO at Queen Elizabeth Hall and were a featured young ensemble at the Ryedale Festival this summer.
“Echo’s imaginative approach and innate musicianship are a delight” - Christopher Glynn, Artistic Director, Ryedale Festival
