Programme Note
How many times have we had the Carducci Quartet? We think this must be their sixth visit to Richmond, and they are always a huge hit with our audiences. Superb musicians, personable, with an exceptional rapport, they are one of the finest string quartets around.
Tonight the Carduccis perform a generously proportioned concert. It includes a much-loved Haydn piece, one of the very first 'modern' string quartets, and Webern's highly charged Langsamer Satz, described as a "little masterpiece". Composed in 1905, Langsamer Satz was never publicly performed - astonishingly - until 1962, just a few years before Shostakovich's very different, very intense Quartet No. 11. The piece by Philip Glass is a companion to his Third Quartet, which the Carduccis performed in Richmond a few years ago, and which gave our audience such pleasure.
What a wonderful end to the season.
