Programme Note
'How Does Mozart Work?' is inspired by a technique of analysis devised by Hans Keller that he called 'functional analysis'. Mozart's 40th Symphony will be performed in full, but in between movements will be interludes which will deconstruct the piece in various ways to show how the piece works. What makes this technique unique is that it is completely wordless; connections within the piece will be made clear entirely through music. Come along if you're interested in how music works!
Also included in this concert is Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante K.364 performed by Lily Whitehurst and Daire Roberts.
The Keller Ensemble was founded by James Heathcote and is made up of students from the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester to explore new ways of approaching established repertoire. The ensemble is named after Hans Keller (1919-1985), who was a music critic and musicologist who was very influential on musical thought in England in latter half of the 20th century.
