Add to my Calendar 20-10-2021 17:45 20-10-2021 19:45 36 Oxford Lieder Festival: Barcarolle Pianist Charles Owen has been described by Gramophone Magazine as ‘one of the finest pianists of his generation’, and this year he celebrates his 50th birthday with a series of concerts and recordings. His programme today includes Chopin’s Barcarolle, inspired by the songs of Venetian gondoliers, Schumann's Arabesque, and selections from Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage (‘Years of Pilgrimage’) that were inspired by, in this case, Switzerland and the majesty of nature. The concert concludes with Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit. Written in 1908, this suite of three movements was inspired by a collection of mysterious, nightmarish poems by Aloysius Bertrand. Ravel himself wrote, 'Gaspard has been a devil in coming, but that is only logical since it was he who is the author of the poems.' It is one of the towering pinnacles of the piano repertoire, with its final movement, 'Scarbo' also one of the most demanding.
