Commotio

Programme Note

In the midst of Lent, Commotio present a programme inspired by Tenebrae: the Lent service of shadow and light. From the surprising dissonances of 16th Century composer Gesualdo, to the iridescent sound world of contemporary composer, Firsova, this is a concert full of contrast: an auditory chiaroscuro.

Pizzetti’s Requiem, written in 1922, intertwines Gregorian chant with modern polyphony. The five movements explore the breadth choral texture, from unison plainsong to intense 12-part harmony.

Commotio celebrates the work of Peter Klatzow, who died in December 2021, with a performance of ‘Three Spiritual Nocturnes’, the texts of which were taken from Desmond Tutu’s Book of African Prayer. Peter was a great friend to the choir, staying with Commotio for the recording of his choral works in 2005.
