Programme Note
Imogen Cooper, doyenne among Schubert players, is joined by three gifted colleagues, Katya Apekisheva, Charles Owen and Dominic Degavino to recreate ‘Schubertiade’, an intimate musical gathering in the Vienna of his time.
The medium of the piano duet is surely the ultimate embodiment of musical closeness and sociability. Originally inspired by Mozart’s shining duet works, Franz Schubert went even further to produce a wonderful repertoire for two pianists united at one keyboard. Ranging from popular, toe-tapping dances and marches to masterpieces conceived on the grandest scale of profundity, this body of music provides an endlessly rewarding treasure trove for players and listeners alike.
This special evening will recreate the atmosphere of the intimate social gatherings where the composer would present his latest music, entertain friends and generally make merry into the small hours. In early 19th century Vienna, a society overshadowed by strict censorship and limited opportunities, such ‘Schubertiade’ became much-needed havens of creativity. Imogen Cooper, a doyenne among Schubert players, has been a guiding influence for generations of pianists. For this concert she will be joined by rising star Dominic Degavino, and London Piano Festival co-founders Katya Apekisheva and Charles Owen, all of whom have benefitted directly from her unique insights. Together they will celebrate the genius of Schubert through shared musical collaboration.
