About Mendelssohn’s Elijah Felix Mendelssohn’s dramatic, 1846 oratorio about Old Testament prophet Elijah was the Messiah of its day: a hugely popular choral work that cemented Mendelssohn’s position as one of the greatest composers of sacred music. Two thousand people attended its premiere at the Birmingham Festival, with Mendelssohn himself conducting. The Times reported: “The last note of Elijah was drowned in a long-continued, unanimous volley of plaudits, vociferous and deafening ... never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art.” Today the variety, beauty and energy of Elijah’s many arias and choruses ensure it remains one of the most popular choral pieces.
