Programme Note

Following the great success of our 2023 performance with the soloist, Kingston Philharmonia is delighted to welcome Simon Callaghan once again, this time to perform John Ireland’s Piano Concerto. This work is one of the most striking British piano concertos of the early 20th century, written for the virtuoso Helen Perkin,
We gratefully acknowledge the support of The John Ireland Charitable Trust, whose generosity has made this concert possible.

The evening will also feature Sibelius’s Finlandia and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1
Finlandia is a vivid expression of Finnish national identity, moving from dark, turbulent opening music to the radiant “Finlandia Hymn” that has become one of the composer’s most celebrated melodies. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, written when he was just eighteen, is a remarkable debut: a sharply characterised blend of wit, irony and emotional depth, showcasing the brilliant orchestral imagination that would define his later work.
