Programme Note
Come and listen as to the enchanting pieces of 19th century women composers brought back to life by cellist, Alexandra Mackenzie, and pianist, Ingrid Sawers.
When concerts were cancelled in lockdown cellist, Alexandra Mackenzie, and pianist, Ingrid Sawers, dedicated time to repertoire hunting. Among the first pieces they found was an enchanting miniature by A.E.Horrocks. Published at the turn of the century it had languished, unchecked out, in the Royal Academy of Music library since. They were stunned to discover that the composer was Amy Horrocks who studied at RAM in the 1880s and premiered works at the Proms. Alexandra and Ingrid realised that many composers were hidden behind bland initials and started searching in other libraries, amassing a treasure trove of lost gems. This concert features the initial miniature ‘Twilight’ by Horrocks alongside pieces by Avril Coleridge-Taylor, (over-shadowed by her famous father Samuel), the virtuoso violinist Ethel Barns, Scottish cellist Marie Dare and others. This concert celebrates the release of a CD of the repertoire.
With great thanks to the Francis Routh Trust, who have sponsored this concert.
