Programme Note
The Merry Opera Company is bringing their critically acclaimed and madcap production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado to Lopping Hall in Essex. on 5th March for two performances. The company want to get as many people back to the theatre after Covid-19 for some light relief and lots of fun in this exuberant production. Expect crazy costumes, lots of laughs and lots of washing up gloves. This really is fun for all the family.
Directed by award-winning theatre director John Ramster with musical director Bradley Wood, the cast features professional opera stars including Anna Sideris as Yum-Yum who recently performed at Garsington and Grange Park Opera, Gareth Edmunds as Nanki-Poo, former Opera Holland Park singer, Christopher Faulkner as Ko-Ko and Susan Moore as Katisha. You may also recognise a Loughton local Ashley Mercer who plays Pooh-Bah. Ashley has won several prestigious young artist awards.
If you do not know the story, take a trip to the topsy-turvy town of Titipu in the land of Pajan! Find romance, chicanery, and a legal conundrum under the capricious eye of the Mikado.
Nanki-Poo cannot marry Yum-Yum because she is betrothed to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, who cannot do his duty without executing himself. Yet when the Mikado insists upon an execution, somehow no-one loses his head… The production described as “…unpretentious, good-humoured frivolity…” promises to be Gilbert and Sullivan as you have never seen it before.
Director John Ramster says “A surprising and high-octane romp through a beloved operetta classic, set against a backdrop of the energy and ebullience of music halls and vaudeville. So successful in Autumn 2021 that we are reviving it for a second tour this Spring...”
