Programme Note

The star of this programme of French music is undoubtedly going to be the talented young cellist from Ross-shire, Hattie McGregor, who will perform this famously demanding cello concerto.

This work will be preceded by two thrilling excerpts from Chabrier’s ebullient opéra-comique, “Le Roi malgré lui” (The Reluctant King); the “Danse Slave” (Slavonic Dance) and the Fête Polonaise (Polish Festival).

In the second half of the concert, we will present one of Charles Gounod’s most accomplished works, his second symphony, which combines some Beethoven-like touches with a wonderful, Gallic, joie-de-vivre in the last movement.
