Programme Note
Discover how musicians bridge the gap between technical excellence and true artistry in this afternoon of discovery and insight.
From the world's greatest stages and in roles from Handel and Bach to heavyweight roles in Verdi and Wagner, the illustrious British baritone Christopher Purves joins the Samling Artist Programme for the first time. He is joined by Simon Lepper, who brings the pianist’s perspective to the art of song and actor James Garnon with his special focus on living inside the text.
You’ll see how singers and pianists work together as a team; pick up valuable tips for any role that requires persuasive communication and you’ll hear stars of the future refining their artistry in a lively programme of song and opera.
The young artists taking part this afternoon are at the start of promising international careers and have been selected for the Samling Artist Programme after a highly competitive audition process. This public event comes at the end of an intensive residential week, during which the artists have been challenged and stretched to take their artistry to new levels, making this a masterclass like no other.
The ticket price includes tea and home made cakes with the artists and leaders during the interval in the beautiful public rooms at Marchmont House.
Return transport from Berwick-upon-Tweed station to Marchmont House can be booked with your ticket at a cost of £15.
