Organ Duo Recital

Add to my Calendar 26-07-2018 19:30 26-07-2018 21:30 36 Organ Duo Recital Bertie Baigent is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the most exciting conductor–composers of his generation.  He is the musical director of the Waterperry Opera Festival, the London Young Sinfonia, and the Percival Ensemble, and has also worked with the WDR Sinfonieorchester, the Gürzenich-Orchester, the Britten Sinfonia, the London Sinfonietta, the Aurora Orchestra, the Bath Philharmonia, Shadwell Opera, the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Salomon Orchestra, the City of Southampton Symphony Orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.  Bertie has assisted conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, and Jac van Steen, and has participated in masterclasses with Martyn Brabbins, Pierre-André Valade, Peter Stark, Nicholas Cleobury, Harald Jers, and others.  In 2017 he was awarded the Royal Academy of Music's Sir Henry Wood Scholarship and Ernest Read Conducting Prize, and participated in the final rounds of the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis.Also at home in the world of opera, recent engagements have included Così fan tutte at the Bedford Park Festival and the world premiere of Nero Monologues for Opera in the City; Bertie looks forward to his debut at Waterperry with Don Giovanni in 2018.  New music is particularly important to Bertie: past and forthcoming collaborations include those with the London Sinfonietta, the Phaedra Ensemble, the Royal Academy Contemporary Ensemble, and 4|12 Collective. Bertie's compositions have been widely performed by artists such as the Aurora Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia, the Choir of St Paul's Cathedral, and the viol consort Fretwork, and have been heard in venues such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Royal Festival Hall.  He has been awarded prizes and commissions by organisations  including the Royal Philharmonic Society, the BBC, the National Centre for Early Music, and the Royal College of Organists.  His works have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, and other European radio stations, and are published by Stainer & Bell. Active as an accompanist, repetiteur, organist, and continuo player, Bertie has recently worked with the Saraband Consort, Helios Opera, and OperaUpClose.  A prize-winning Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, Bertie is acting assistant director of music at St Marylebone Parish Church, London.  Bertie trained as a cellist and pianist before focusing on conducting and composition.  He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a double first in 2016, and studies with Sian Edwards at the Royal Academy of Music. Website   Robert Smith is currently the Assistant Organist of St. Wilfrid's Church (York Oratory in Formation). In 2014/2015 he served as the Assistant Organist at St. Paul's Bloor Street, the largest Anglican church in Toronto, where he regularly accompanied the church choir. Previously the organ scholar of Somerville College, Oxford, he accompanied and occasionally directed the choir of that college for their regular services and concerts. He began musical life aged 5 on the piano, then took up the organ aged 13 and received lessons from Henry Fairs at the Birmingham Conservatoire for five years. Upon reaching Oxford Robert was taught by Stephen Farr and William Whitehead, as well as achieving his ARCO diploma, for which he also won the Sowerbutts Prize and Durrant Prize. He has had the pleasure of participating in numerous choir concerts and tours, notably at Blackburn Cathedral, Lancaster Priory, Birmingham Cathedral, Ampleforth Abbey, Coventry Cathedral and three times at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Robert regularly performs recitals as well as participating in masterclasses led by David Goode, Guy Bovet and Thomas Trotter. He collaborated with conductor Nicholas Cleobury for a concert recorded by the BBC. Summer 2014 saw Robert take part in a choir tour of America and this has been followed by four recital tours of Germany, across Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria.
