Programme Note
“An opera perform’d at Mr. Josias Priest’s Boarding-School at Chelsey by young Gentlewomen. The words made by Mr Nat. Tate. The musick composed by Mr Henry Purcell.”
The Bar Musical Society is delighted to present a concert performance of Purcell’s only true opera, with Emma Kirkby singing the role of Dido, Queen of Carthage in this tragic tale of her love for the Trojan hero Aeneas. The soloists will be accompanied by the Bar Musical Society orchestra with a chorus (the St Genesius Choir) of courtiers, witches, cupids and sailors.
Chau-Yee Lo plays Bach’s virtuosic Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052 and, with Emma Kirkby, Stockhausen’s Tierkreis, twelve melodies representing the signs of the zodiac.
