Programme Note
For its 10th anniversary concert, The Fourth Choir, London’s LGBT+ classical choir, celebrates the Life, Loves and Legacy of Dame Ethel Smyth
Dame Ethel Smyth - suffragette, passionate bisexual and the first female composer to be made a Dame of the British Empire - provides the inspiration for a journey through a thousand years of choral masterpieces.
We’ll hear music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the 19th century and the present day, including two world premieres, specially commissioned for this concert: a setting of poetry by Emily Dickinson by composer Kerry Andrew, and a special collaboration that pairs words by actor and poet Ashleigh Wilder with music by singer-songwriter and activist CN Lester.
The life of Ethel Smyth, the history preceding her and her legacy to the present day will be narrated by leading actors on stage and screen Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly, Deeply; Wolf) and Sanchia McCormack (Doctor Who, Wallander).
The Choir returns to Milton Court after its ground-breaking collaboration last October with Deaf professional musicians. This concert also marks a new chapter in the Choir's history - the first performance led by its newly-appointed Music Director, Jamie Powe.
