Matosinhos String Quartet

Programme Note

A fresh perspective on classics by Mozart and Shostakovich – and an Iberian rarity - from this energetic young Portuguese quartet.

The  Matosinhos String Quartet has become an energising force across Portuguese musical life. Today, it demonstrates its prowess in two landmarks of the repertoire - Mozart’s Quartet K.428 and Shostakovich’s Eighth - plus a classic from the Portguese chamber repertoire: the folk-inspired Cenas nas Montanhas by José Vianna da Motta.

The ECHO Rising Stars scheme offers London audiences a chance to hear outstanding young artists from a wide diversity of European musical traditions. The Matosinhos String Quartet was founded in 2007 to serve the city of Matosinhos, and comprises four graduates of the Lisbon’s Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra, mentored by Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartet. This lunchtime programme at Milton Court pairs two powerfully contrasted masterpieces with Cenas nas Montanhas – a rare chance to hear it performed by its pre-eminent modern interpreters.

A pre-concert introduction and post-concert discussion with the artist will be led by Alistair Tait, Head of Chamber Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
