Programme Note
This is the second concert in WMC’s projected series of the complete Masses of Joseph Haydn. Having started last year with his best known, the ‘Nelson’ Mass, this year we turn to one of the least known, the so-called ‘Creation’ Mass, Haydn’s penultimate setting, composed in 1801 when he was nearly 70 years old. By way of contrast, Mozart was just 15 when he wrote his first setting of the text Regina coeli for solo soprano and chorus. To complete the concert, we include one of Haydn’s most popular concertos, his first Cello Concerto in C, composed around 1761, with the young Latvian cellist Margarita Balanas as soloist.
