Programme Note

The work of the Air Ambulance is recognised in our first concert with music conjuring images of Air, Sea and Land. Walton’s score for the film The First of the Few soon found its way into the concert hall, transformed into his Spitfire Prelude and Fugue. In contrast to this stirring opening, Elgar’s beautiful Sea Pictures set a series of poems by different authors, including one by his wife Alice. Completing this programme is Vaughan Williams’ 5th Symphony, dedicated to Sibelius, another nationalist composer. Of all Vaughan Williams’ symphonies this is perhaps the most indefinably ‘English’.

There will be a retiring collection for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

Reasonable access to the chapel and separate WC facilities nearby.  Please note that whilst the attendance of wheelchair users at the concert is welcomed, it would be helpful to have advance notice of their coming so suitable places can be prepared in advance to better cater for them.

Tickets also available on the door and from Oakham Wines LE15 6AH
